The social events of ISHC 2024 formed part of the scientific programme of the XXIII International Symposium on Homogeneous Catalysis, held at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Trieste. Around the formal sessions, delegates gathered in informal settings designed to encourage the conversations that often turn into collaborations. The organisers framed these moments as an essential part of the symposium experience rather than an optional add-on, reflecting the long-standing tradition of the ISHC series of combining scientific exchange with genuine personal interaction among participants.

Networking and local cultural programming accompanied the symposium days in Trieste, giving attendees the opportunity to experience the host city between lecture halls. Because the number of participants admitted to the symposium was limited, places for the social programme were allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and were included as part of registration. Visitors therefore found the social schedule already arranged, removing the need to plan outings independently while still leaving time for independent exploration of the city.

The social programme was built around a mix of welcoming receptions, shared meals and guided cultural encounters, providing a relaxed backdrop for meeting colleagues and reconnecting with friends from previous editions. Such gatherings are a hallmark of the homogeneous catalysis community, where long-standing relationships among academic and industrial researchers underpin the exchange of results, methods and ideas. Time set aside for these events was intended to spark new contacts and to strengthen the networks that sustain the field between symposia.

Beyond organised activities, the international character of ISHC 2024 meant that attendees arrived from many countries and institutions, and the social programme helped such a diverse group feel at ease in Trieste.
